Romania's Coaches: A Quick Update

--- A while ago we reported that former Romanian women's coach Octavian Belu, whose National Agency of Sport was disbanded upon the establishment of a new Ministry of Youth and Sport, had received an offer to become Secretary of the new ministry, dealing specifically with "problems in sport." He declined the offer at the time. It now appears that Belu may become Secretary of Sport after all. Gazeta Sporturilor reports that Belu has had several meetings with the new Minister of Sport and has agreed in principle to continue working on several projects for the Ministry. He will have about a month's time to consider whether or not to take up the post of Secretary. Gazeta Sporturilor also reports that Belu recently had a meeting with the President of the Romanian Olympic Committee and the Minister of Sport to discuss the budgets of various Romanian sports federations. We trust he did his best to ensure that the Romanian Gymnastics Federation got a nice slice of the pie.

--- Meanwhile, it seems that long-time Romanian men's team coach Dan Grecu, who recently resigned from that post, won't leave the team entirely. According to this none-too-recent Mediafax article, Grecu will stay on as the men's team's coordinator, an important position which according to FRG President Adrian Stoica represents "a promotion, not a change." As reported earlier, Nicusor Pascu has taken over as the men's head coach. He will be assisted by Vasile Vug, Stefan Gal and former national team member Ioan Suciu.

Octavian Belu Receives and Declines Interesting Job Offer

Cotidianul reports that former Romanian head coach Octavian Belu, currently President of the Romanian National Sports Agency, was offered the job of Secretary of State for Sports Problems (no, we're not making this up) in a newly to be established Ministry of Youth and Sport. Apparently Belu declined. We can see why - he might end up having to investigate his own checkered past, or a former co-worker's. Oops.
